Glassdoor.com is garnering a lot of press, and Rob Hof of Business Week wrote on the free service that fashions itself as a “career and workplace community where anyone can find and anonymously share real-time reviews, ratings, and salary details about specific jobs for specific employers.”
Companies are already familiar with the new reality of Facebook and other social networking sites that discuss and disclose aspects of a company (even dirty little secrets), but this new service takes it further. Transparency in the workplace is becoming key, as employees are constantly wondering what their true value is to their company and/or others.
Network World just posted an article written by Martin Veitch of CIO highlighting the the importance of salary disclosure at blue chip companies. The impact compensation has on prospective employees can determine whether a company hires a star employee who can make a real difference or simply a worker-bee. Competition in Silicon Valley for marquee employees is cutthroat, so such new tools that can leverage a company's overall image will become vital.
The impact of Glassdoor.com is potentially devastating to Head Hunters, but may very well become the platform by which employees talk about their organizations, and where folks looking for greener pastures look first when exploring options.
