Social media is no longer just for networking, interaction and status updates; it can be used as a vehicle to demonstrate your support for political movements. This week, people have been using their social media avatars to peacefully show their support for those fighting for democracy in Iran.
The trend of shading avatars green has become infectious and inspired hundreds of people to get educated on what’s going. The new color creates curiosity and invites people to ask why. I noticed the growing trend today, finally pushing me to ask what was going on:
@billneufeld and @thekenyeung were kind enough to clue me in.
Minutes later, I was asked by another fellow twitterer why my profile was green. Multiply this process a hundred times over, and we’ve got a Twitter revolution that has been covered with interest by dozens of media.
This usage of social media just underlines my belief that we have yet to experience its full power, and its influence is only hampered by our own imaginations. Although these tools have been around for years, they continue to surprise people on how easy it is to reach target audiences. People are finding resources faster and more easily than ever before – whether you represent a political movement, a technology company or a consumer business. People are hungry for information, interaction and new developments.
