Bucking Recession, Agency Expands Marketing Services Portfolio, Adds New IT and Cleantech Clients and Drives Awareness for all Clients
Sterling Communications, Inc., an independent, full-service communications agency specializing in the technology sector, grew revenues in 2010 despite the sluggish economy. During the year, the firm — which has weathered three major recessions since its inception in 1989 without a layoff — added new clients in the cleantech sector and launched several new marketing communications services.
"We hit some remarkable milestones last year,” said Marianne O’Connor, Sterling’s president and CEO. “We achieved one of our strategic goals for the year which was to expand our client roster in the cleantech sector. 2010 also marked Sterling’s transition from a traditional PR agency to an integrated marketing and digital media firm, as we broadened our services to include website design, SEO and videos/web animation work. I am proud of what our team has accomplished and am looking forward to accelerating our growth in 2011.”
Some notable 2010 achievements include:
- Promoting the new cloud-based software stream architecture from Mitel, a leading provider of unified communications software solutions, which resulted in its inclusion in CRN’s “10 Biggest Networking Stories of 2010.”
- Designing and building websites for cloud testing service provider SOASTA and Mexican luxury resort Villa Amor.
- Securing more than 18 million media impressions for the Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) in the two months leading up to the November general election.
- Managing the entire video development process — including script, storyboard, animation, voiceover and music — for Mu Dynamics, working with animation studio Lilipip!.
- Introducing the Veolia Innovation Accelerator at the Cleantech Group’s annual Cleantech Forum for Veolia Environnement, the $50-billion worldwide leader in environmental services.
- Promoting TEDMED conference appearance of rocker Ozzy Osbourne with Knome, a pioneer in providing whole genome sequencing and interpretation solutions. The analysis of the Osbourne genome was covered by more than 150 media outlets, ranging from Fox News to the Sunday Times (UK) to The Onion.
- Increasing Attensity’s number of media briefings by 46 percent in 2010, resulting in an 83 percent year-over-year increase in media coverage for the Customer Experience Management software applications pioneer.
- Securing extensive broadcast coverage for the Americas headquarters launch of NewBay Software, a digital lifestyle solutions provider for mobile operators and device manufacturers worldwide.
- Laying the groundwork for the Open Patent Alliance’s patent pool launch in early 2011 by establishing relationships with key business and industry press and analysts and securing multiple bylined article opportunities.

New clients signed by Sterling in 2010 include Veolia Environnement, Sigma Designs, Mitel, Unirac, Digital Payment Technologies and NewBay Software.
“Our results over the past year demonstrate Sterling’s ability to help technology-focused companies — large and small — gain greater visibility and enhance market share,” said O’Connor. “We’re looking forward to 2011, confident that we have the right mix of talent, services and experience to help our existing and new clients meet their business objectives.”
